I mixed a song a few weeks earlier, having to choose between one of two endings. I also mixed the tail end of the unused portion for posterity, knowing it normally might not find the light of day. It was like reaching for, and finding the ‘next stone’. So it is with music, and stonework.

Bethel multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter Spencer Lewis is a stone-wall builder when not performing or recording his music. Lewis’ music is in a way a reflection of the art of stone wall construction. As he must find the right stone to fit into his wall as he builds up the layers, so he must find the right music part as he layers each track in his recordings. Lewis’ most recent CD, is number 30 in his growing discography that spans more than 30 years of recording. “Solitude is the Deepest Well” shows just how carefully Lewis works to achieve the sound that has become his trademark.

In sailing terms, a broad reach is achieved when the wind is nearly full in the sails and this album encapsulates that feeling. The backbone of the album uses both crunchy electric and driving acoustic guitars, including inimitable cross-flat-picking. There's bass, organ, melodic synthesizer passages, dancing mandolin, and drums both steady or hanging by a thread. Soaring over the top is my iconic violin, cutting through like the bow of a boat in high seas.
In My Arms features unique interpretations of nursery rhymes. folk songs, and original lullabies; soothing, rollicking and pure fun.
